A Divorce Celebration can bring a great sense of relief.
Divorce Celebration, Is it Appropriate to Commemorate?
Writing this blog, I just can’t seem to get that old 1971 Rare Earth tune, I Just want to Celebrate out of my head! If you “can’t be bothered by sorrow or can’t be bothered by hate” feel free, if you dare, to take a listen to the song by clicking here!
Back in 2010, I published an article on the Ohio Family Law Blog titled Gifts for the Newly Divorced. Some Tasteful and Well…Others Not So Much. It was a humorous tongue-in-cheek blog article. Click here to read it. It was one of the most viewed blogs I have written! In 2012, we published another blog article titled Divorce Celebration – Complete with Cake! You can read it by clicking here.
Divorce Celebration Has Become More Common in Recent Years
I have come across several articles recently, including one in the Wall Street Journal on July 17, 2023, titled Divorce Parties are a New Hot Invite. Apparently, these divorce celebrations are becoming more common place and people are finding new creative ways to celebrate. To illustrate the increase, according to the WSJ article, Pinterest searches for “divorce-party games” surged 80% and searches for “divorce cakes” rose 50% in June of 2022 from a year earlier. There were also significant increases in “divorce gifts” and “divorce party decorating ideas” searches. So, I thought republishing these old posts from the Ohio Family Law Blog on this subject made good sense!
People love to celebrate important moments in their life, such as graduations, birthdays, or weddings. Although you generally think of a divorce as a serious and somber time, for many it’s the time to clink the champagne glasses and toast to a new chapter and a new direction. Divorces are usually a stressful and emotional time, and once it is finalized an individual may feel an intense sense of relief, freedom or even rebirth! So instead of wallowing in sadness, more and more people are electing to celebrate divorce with a life-affirming or fun way to mark the event.
Creative Ways To Celebrate Divorce Completion
Divorce parties are growing in popularity. They run the gambit, so if you are thinking of marking the occasion with a party you will not be alone! These are a few creative ways to commemorate the divorce being complete. Indulge yourself with some pampering. Hosting a spa day for some close friends, complete with facials, manicure/pedicures, and massages can be renewing. Escape room divorce parties are a popular idea. For those of you who have not heard of them, escape rooms are fun for groups of friends. You basically work together to solve puzzles and crack codes in order to escape the room within a designated time frame.
Maybe you want to have a weekend staycation and investigate your city. Find a great hotel or a nice bed and breakfast and find some fun activities to try. Or, take your pals to a karaoke bar and sing the night away. Going to a comedy club with a group can be fun too. Laughter is the best medicine sometimes! Going to an axe throwing party could be a novel and different way of letting the frustration go. Maybe you want to celebrate with just yourself, or with a few close friends, or with a big group. The possibilities are endless!
People react to the end of a marriage in many different ways. Don’t focus on “bashing” your ex. This is particularly true if you have children with your ex. After all you will have to interact with your ex on a continual basis and sometimes words spoken in anger can “leak” out causing emotional damage to your former spouse or to the children. Even if you can hardly stand to look at your former spouse, a divorce party may not be the time to rehash negative feelings. Although your friends and family are supportive, they would probably like to instead focus on you and the new chapter you are embarking on. Starting over can mean a fresh start and a chance to reinvent yourself or just become the best version of you. Now that is worth celebrating!
